Planning endurance competition ...

Aussie link to WEG endurance win

By Jenny Sheppard

AUSTRALIAN riders may not have starred in the 100-mile endurance at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, but there was one link to Australia in the championship.

Silver medallist Sheikh Mohammed, of the United Arab Emirates, riding Ciel Oriental, owns the global Darley Stud, which has four Australian properties, one at Seymour and three in NSW.

He also heads his family's Godolphin Racing operations in NSW.

Gold went to Maria Mercedes Alvarez Ponton, from Spain, riding Nobby, and bronze to Sheikh Mohammed's son Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, riding SAS Alexis.

Although thrilled with the victory, Ponton also credited Sheikh Mohammed.

"It's really a strange feeling because I really wanted Sheikh Mohammed to be the world champion," Ponton said at the press conference.

"I think he deserves it. He's the person doing more for this sport in the world."

Sheikh Mohammed's second-place finish helped the United Arab Emirates team to a gold medal in the Endurance Team World Championships.

Silver went to France and bronze to Germany.

Penny Toft, from Marburg, in Queensland, was the only Australian to finish. She was placed 44th, riding Don.

Other team members were Norbert Radney, from Perth, whose horse was eliminated at the gate 3 vet inspection with metabolic problems, and Matt Sample, from Imbil, in Queensland, who was eliminated at the gate 5 inspection when his horse, Tarrangower Crescendo, was lame.

Aussie reining riders qualify

TWO Australian reining riders, Warren Backhouse and Martin Larcombe, qualified for the individual reining final but missed out on medals.

Backhouse finished 13th riding Wiza Bronze Star, with a score of 216.5 and Larcombe finished 19th, riding Top Prize Prince.

The individual gold and silver medals went to the US, with Canada winning bronze.

Australia did not qualify for the teams final, won by the US from Belgium and Italy.

WEG horses test negative

ALL blood and urine samples taken from horses at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky were negative for all prohibited substances.

A total of 140 samples were taken from 82 or 11 per cent of all competing horses, with blood being taken from all 82, plus urine where possible.

All individual medal horses were tested, as well as one member of each medal winning team.

"This is a great success for everyone involved in equestrian sport and is the best possible endorsement of the FEI's Clean Sport Campaign," FEI president HRH Princess Haya said.

"It also proves the value of the FEI's educational program." (enduranceriding.news)

Technology at WEG Endurance Event

thehorse.com
by: Marsha Hayes

GPS Tracking and Swipe Card Accuracy

Cutting-edge GPS technology will provide real-time tracking of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) Endurance competitors as they race tomorrow in Lexington, Ky.

"Anyone with a laptop will be able to track the horses, at the event, or at home, around the world," explained Emmett Ross, endurance discipline manager for WEG. Ross also noted the system will be in place in the staging area to alert crews when their horses are coming into a vet check and allow them to adjust race strategy based on knowing competitors' positions.

For equine enthusiasts on site at the Kentucky Horse Park, several large viewing screens will be stationed around the park in the trade show and hospitality areas, and perhaps other sites to enhance viewing of the lengthy WEG event, projected to last around eight hours.

Announcements will also be broadcast on site alerting spectators when horses will be arriving in the vet-check staging area.

The GPS system initially will be set to "ping" or update data every 30 seconds. Ross plans to lower the update rate to six seconds near the finish, where at that time, "You will be able to really see that little icon move along."

Because the Kentucky course does not allow spectators on the trails, public roads, or private lands where horses are competing, "This system will be a way to allow everybody to view the event," said Ross.

Swipe cards will also be added to enhance efficiency at the games. According to Becky Hart, chef d'equipe of endurance Team USA, the cards have been used in the Middle East and Europe and furnish valuable time-tracking data to crews and event veterinarians. Ross also noted a back-up system is in place, should electricity fail.

When a horse comes into a vet check, a crew member swipes that rider's card which records that horse's number, team, and logs the time of when the horse entered vet check. When the horse is presented to the vet to determine if his or her heart rate has dropped to the required rate to allow the horse to continue, the card is swiped again. After a set number of horses have swiped a computer printout is generated.

Because the time between check in and pulse down can be indicative of a horse's fatigue, Hart explained print-out access allowed one to, "keep an eye on the competition" by watching for an increase in pulse-down time. "It also allows me to keep track of each loop time, for my team and [their] competitors," Hart continued.

According to Ross, the computer print-outs assist event-monitoring veterinarians in awarding Best Conditioned awards by providing a summary of pulse-down times over the 100 mile race. Soundness after the event will also be keenly scrutinized, but the swipe card's fast, accurate analysis of each horse’s pulse rate data is a valuable veterinary analysis tool.

During the vet checks, hand-held heart rate monitors will connect to large viewing screens, allowing spectators to see for themselves the equine athlete’s moment of reaching the criteria needed to start another loop

Big Money Bolsters Equestrian Endurance Race

By KATIE THOMAS

The 100-mile endurance race is easily the most romantic of the eight horse disciplines on display here at the World Equestrian Games, evoking Bedouin desert races or the nostalgia of the Pony Express.

Sunday’s race, won by María Mercedes Alvarez Pontón of Spain, took 100 horses and their riders across a Kentucky landscape of tobacco and thoroughbred farms as competitors tested the stamina and grit of their prized Arabian horses.

Much is made of the long ride, but seasoned competitors know the race is often won or lost when horse and rider are not on the course. The endurance competition is as much a Nascar race as it is a horse marathon: a winning strategy often plays out in the rest period between the race’s six loops, when riders cool and relax their horses so they can pass a range of medical tests and advance to the next stage as quickly as possible.

Teams left little to chance during Sunday’s race, which is on a par with the Olympics among endurance riders. As soon as riders pulled their horses into a cooldown area, grooms worked in tightly choreographed motions, yanking saddles and dousing the animals with buckets of ice water. Horses cannot move to the mandatory veterinarian check until their heart rate drops below 64 beats a minute.

“The more quickly he passes through, the faster he will leave,” said Jean-Louis Leclerc, the chef d’equipe, or team leader, for the French team. If a horse does not cool down quickly enough, “you can lose four or five minutes and then you have to make up the time later.”

Maintaining such expert crews takes deep pockets, and for several top competitors, that is not a problem. The modern-day sport of endurance riding began in the 1950s in California, but an influx of money from Arab royalty in the last decade has transformed it into a pastime of kings and sheiks. The royal families of Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai maintain vast stables of horses that have been bred and conditioned for the epic rides as well as high-performance centers devoted to the sport.

Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, took second place for the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, followed in third by his son, Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.

Another son of Sheik Mohammed’s, Sheik Majid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, finished in sixth place. The son of the king of Bahrain also competed, finishing in 13th place.

In a news conference Saturday, Sheik Mohammed said Arabs had a powerful cultural connection to the sport. In the desert, owning a well-conditioned horse can be a matter of life or death.

“Horses can save you,” he said. “With the Arabs, they love the horse, and the horse is in their blood.”

The royals do not pack lightly. In what has become a tradition in international endurance races, Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain erected semipermanent “chalets” near the venue at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The tents were outfitted with crystal chandeliers, white tablecloths and oriental rugs and featured catered buffets throughout the day.

The influence of Arab royal money has also been felt on the course. After the French team won gold at the last World Equestrian Games in 2006, many of the team’s best horses were purchased by Arab buyers. Leclerc said the team made the best of it. “We have other horses in France,” he said. The French won silver in the team competition, behind the United Arab Emirates.

Still, many endurance enthusiasts seem to appreciate the presence of the Arab teams, which helps drive global interest in the sport — and can help pay their bills. Alvarez Pontón, whose husband, Jaume Punti-Dachs , is a trainer for Sheik Mohammed, thanked the sheik in remarks after her win.

“I think he deserves to be the world champion,” she said. “He is the person who has done more for this sport in the world. This sport is what it is now because of him.”

But the 34-year-old Alvarez Pontón acknowledged she was not willing to trade medals with him — not after having taken first place seven weeks after giving birth to a daughter. “Now, I cannot change,” she said with a laugh.

Alvarez Pontón finished the race in 7 hours 35 minutes 44 seconds, which was 55 seconds ahead of Sheik Mohammed.

But financial backing was only half the battle Sunday. The cooldown area, particularly during the early legs, became a center of activity as crews rushed to prepare their horses, sometimes pushing others out of their way. The commotion can spook a horse and drive its heart rate up, so teams will often desensitize the animals to loud noises or quick movements ahead of time.

A Horse Marathon Takes On the Pace of Nascar

The United States placed its horses in the middle of a circle of cars and honked the horns to get them accustomed to the atmosphere.

“You need a horse with a really good mind, that’s not going to get excited,” said Becky Hart, the chef d’equipe for the American team and a three-time world champion.

Her team did not fare well Sunday. All but one of the five Americans were eliminated during veterinarian checks, with Heather Reynolds finishing fourth, only to be eliminated for a lame horse.

Jeremy Reynolds, Heather’s husband and an endurance rider, said the United States team closely studied the work of the United Arab Emirates crew, reviewing film of the grooms’ movements in the cooldown area for hints about picking up crucial seconds.

“You can see how they kind of devise a pattern so they don’t get jumbled up,” he said.

Sometimes, however, the grooms can do nothing but wait. Sheik Mohammed entered in first place through the gate at the end of the fourth leg. But his horse took nearly five minutes to cool down, and he fell to fifth place as he entered the fifth loop.

Once a horse’s heart rate has fallen, veterinarians check for lameness, listen to its gut for signs of trouble and look for other injuries.

If the horse passes the examination, it continues on to the rest period, which can range from 30 to 50 minutes.

The rest period is “where all the key things go on,” said John Yeoman, who assisted his wife, Christine. “We’ll all have masseurs, we’ll be feeding them, we’ll be giving them electrolytes,” he said.

During the rest period between the second and third loop, the horse belonging to the American rider Lindsay Graham, Monk, received a new shoe while others massaged his hindquarters. Nearby, a team of grooms from the United Arab Emirates walked a horse between the stalls while feeding him a basket of hay.

Simply finishing a race is an accomplishment. Only about 40 percent of riders typically complete endurance races, and Sunday was no different. By 9:30 p.m., with riders still on the course, 42 competitors had been pulled from the race.

Graham’s horse was disqualified after completing the third leg when his heart rate was too high. Graham said she was surprised.

“He wanted to go faster the whole time, was always asking to do a little bit more,” she said. “But stuff happens.” (endurance.net)

Peningkatan kualitas genetika kuda Kavaleri TNI AD

The 2014 World equestrian games

The region around Caen, Normandy, France, site of the 2014 World Equestrian Games, offers many places and events to delight the equestrian. It's not too early to start planning your trip!

September 2, 2010--In 2014, the FEI World Equestrian Games will be held in Caen in Normandy, France, during the anniversary of the Normandy invasion of World War II. And it’s not too early to begin planning your trip.

Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy) is an equestrian’s delight with historic stables and spectator events from harness and flat racing to polo, show jumping and more. And, of course, there are also are the things that make France, and particularly Normandy, a wonderful place to visit--local cheeses, French bread, delicious wine, charming 17th- and 18th-century country cottages, miles of white sandy beaches and historic villages around every corner.

On a recent trip to preview the venues for the 2014 World Equestrian Games, I was introduced to just a few of the very special equestrian sites in Basse-Normandie. Here’s a quick preview of why a trip to Normandy either before or during the Games is a must:

The French National Studs--two of these are in Basse-Normandie. The first, Le Pin, was built by Louis XIV to house his horses outside Paris and thus is known as the “Versailles for horses.” Today it is a 2,500- acre estate dedicated to equine events and to the preservation and growth of the French horse breeds, especially Thoroughbreds and French Trotters (similar to Standardbreds in the U.S.). The Stud owns 40 stallions and is responsible for half of France’s racehorse population. The stables are original and house both the stallions and a number of horses used for a special parade of horses every Thursday during the summer. The estate is also the site of numerous equestrian events as well as an equine museum, an historic chateau and a unique race course (featured in the recent movie on Coco Chanel)
he second National Stud in Basse Normandie is in the center of the town of Saint-Lo. Built in 1806, the Saint-Lo National Stud was the first National Stud--and today is the largest. Dedicated to the breeding of Selle Francais (the French warmblood), as well as Norman Cob and Percheron, the Stud stands 60 stallions and is the center of sport horse breeding and promotion. It also hosts numerous equestrian competitions each year.

Deauville--This popular French resort on the English Channel is home to two of France’s leading racetracks, which host polo as well as flat, harness and jump races. The original track, la Touques, is right in the center of this historic town, which is well worth a trip for its beaches, historic luxury hotels and wonderful architecture. Also in Deauville is the site of a new equestrian center, Le Pole International du Cheval, due to open this fall. Primarily financed by various French governmental bodies, the new center will include a riding school, boarding facilities, three indoor and three outdoor arenas and a restaurant. The center expects to attract international show jumping and dressage events and host international teams preparing for the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 WEG, as well as serving the local equestrian community. The design and facilities make it well worth a visit.

Graignes Racecourse--A wonderful family outing, complete with barbeque and fireworks, can be had at this racecourse dedicated to trotters. Races are held throughout the year, and the course also is home to a school for training drivers and jockeys. One of the fun sights is races with jockeys riding the trotters rather than driving. Fireworks--a family favorite—are scheduled after the evening race cards.

One of the fascinating aspects of the horse industry in Normandy and all of France is the central role played by governmental bodies, from national and regional government support of WEG 2014 to events sponsored by the area towns and cities. Everything from the 23 National Studs to state-of-the-art equine research centers and, most recently, university programs dedicated to equine employment is government-supported.

Through the “Horse Industry Economic Cluster,” Normandy aims to have horses play a critical role in economic development through cooperation between industry, research and education. This concept appears to be the first of its kind in the world, and Normandy has taken the leading role in its development. One cannot help but admire the facilities at the new international equestrian center in Deauville, the breeding facilities in historic settings at du Pin and St. Lo and the veterinary research centers near Caen. All of which, together with all that is uniquely French, make Normandy an ideal travel destination anytime, but especially for the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games.

For more information about Normandy and its equestrian and tourist facilities, be sure to visit the Normandy pavilion at this year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.(by Susan Harding)

Mongol Derby

The last four riders crossed the finish line in Binder soum yesterday (Sunday) morning, thus bringing to a splendid conclusion the second Mongol Derby. We spoke to some of the riders from the finish camp after a day spent attending to weary bodies and stunted appetites. For some, the pride of completing such an epic adventure was palpable, while others were experiencing an acute desire to get back out on the steppe, finally still after eight gruelling days in the saddle and already missing the rhythm of the race.

Australian entrant and professional track rider Alisa Vermay showed the grit which comes with the territory of a life with horses. "I am so disappointed not to finish, but a day off recovering from heat stroke last week revealed to me that I had ridden through the pain barrier. My back and shoulders were very sore, and as a profgessional rider I just cannot risk further injury. The [Prometheus]medical team have been fantastic and I am feeling better already." Despite her early exit and bodily injury, she had plenty of fond memories to treasure; "I loved it. I absolutely loved it!"

Susi Saddler was one of two riders to take the chance and camp wild between the urtuus, and she described the experience as "amazing". Her partner for the night was Camilla Swift, and she described their encampment, in bivvy bags under a rock, their horses tethered and hobbled close at hand; "luckily we were on two lazy buggers and they just lay down and went to sleep next to us. We had an alarm set at 45 minute intervals to be on the safe side, but they didn't move a muscle! We had our saddles for pillows". Ah, the romance!

All of the riders praised the plucky and quirky Mongolian horses, who carried our brave riders across rivers, flood plains, up steep and stony passes, through desert. Susi remembered fondly a little stallion she partnered in the mid-stages; "he was so fit, he galloped for much of the leg and we swept across a wide open plain, with huge red crags either side". She admitted she would have loved to have taken him home. "He'd clean up on the endurance circuit".(by endurance.net)

Endurance Board comments on World Equestrian Games withdrawals

The Endurance Board of Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) has distanced itself from the controversy surrounding the withdrawal of two combinations from the World Equestrian Games.

Two-time national champion Jenny Champion and 2010 national champion Sue Reid each withdrew from the team after their first-choice grooms failed to gain selection.

The withdrawals have left New Zealand with three combinations in endurance in the Games in Kentucky, severely damaging the country's chances of team honours.

The Endurance Board, in a statement to members, noted the public discussion and debate around the withdrawals and voiced fears it could damage the sport's standing.

It said it wanted to reiterate to members that the Endurance Board held no authority over ESNZ High Performance and retained no position of influence over endurance high-performance selections or selection criteria for the Games.

"The Endurance Board has expressed its concern to the ESNZ chief executive at the lack of forthcoming and timely communication in regard to the withdrawals, and has asked for the Endurance Board to be given a better understanding of the 'events' and procedure leading up to the formal announcement of the withdrawals."

It continued: "The Endurance Board would like to express to members their concern [as] to the damage that the sport might suffer due to the consistent negative discussion and debate being held in the public arena and would ask that those involved give first consideration to what is good for the sport of endurance.

"The Endurance Board does take this opportunity to acknowledge all of the correspondence in regard to the WEG Team that has been sent to them.

"The Board of Endurance would like to confirm their ongoing support and encouragement to the remaining Endurance WEG Team as they represent New Zealand Endurance on the world stage."

Mencoba eksis

Art 821.2.3 – Inspection Decorum
• Horses which are presented for vetting must proceed, as instructed, directly from the ‘timed in gate’ to the veterinary examination area (vet lane) showing constant forward motion.
• No action must be taken to hold back the horse or to prevent this constant forward motion (this to include deviation from course, encouragement either by sound or by command to stop).
• Whistling within the vet gate to encourage a horse to urinate is not allowed and considered as a failure to observe this article and may attract disqualification or other disciplinary action.

Please be aware that the following can be enforced should the above regulations not be followed at all times:

 Should a horse be presented at the vet gate with tack then that horse will be considered to have failed the first inspection. The time in will be cancelled and the horse will be required to exit the vet gate and present for a second (final) presentation.
 Should a horse fail to proceed directly to the line veterinarian, as instructed by an official, the Rider (Person Responsible) will be in breach of Art. 821.2.3 and may be given either a fixed time penalty of 5 minutes and/or be given a yellow warning card. (Note: two yellow warning cards results in immediate disqualification from the event and a two month suspension from all FEI competitions)
 Should a horse be walked so slowly that it stops then it is considered to be in breach of ‘constant forward motion’ and may be subject to either a fixed time penalty of 5 minutes and/or be given a yellow warning card. (Note: two yellow warning cards results in immediate disqualification from the event and a two month suspension from all FEI competitions)
 The horse will not be allowed to enter the vet lane itself until the heart rate has been taken and instruction given by the line Veterinarian to trot.

Harga satu ekor kuda biasa berkisar Rp 2 juta-Rp 8 juta.

Tinggi badannya kira-kira 1,5 m.

Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. memiliki kuda bernama Os Koub ("the Torrent"), jenis Bedouin, karena larinya seperti kilat.
